Prayer of Reconciliation

Father most Holy, it is Your will that by the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Your Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, all Your children be reconciled to You, and to one another.  Our day-to-day failings interfere with Your plan of love, and so we ask Your forgiveness.

Give us a share in Your Work of unifying and building up the Church.  We ask that You give us the grace, from this day forward, to follow You and to love You with hearts renewed.

That we may cooperate in the Mystery of Redemption along the way of Calvary:
R:    We wish to follow You, Lord.

That, together with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint John, and Saint Mary Magdalene at the foot of the Cross, we may share in the intimate suffering of Your wounded Heart:
R:    We wish to follow You, Lord.

That the message of salvation be announced everywhere:
R:    We wish to follow You, Lord.

In union with all our brothers and sisters on their way toward You:
R:    We wish to follow You, Lord.

And that all those who have strayed from Your Love be reunited in it:
R:    We wish to follow You, Lord.

Let us pray
Lord Jesus, Who gave Yourself up completely for us and have given us Your Body and Your Blood, make us attentive to Your merciful Love and to Your Eucharistic Presence.  Unite us to Your designs for the salvation of the whole world, hour after hour, our whole life long.  Grant that, in keeping with Your wishes, we be gathered one day in You in the great glory and joy of Heaven.  Amen.

Prayer of Consecration

Father of lights, from Whom descends every perfect gift, it has pleased You, “in Your wisdom and in Your kindness,” to reveal Yourself to the world through Your Only-Begotten Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Eternal Word, sent from the Father, You who enlighten everyone so as to “tear them from the darkness of sin and raise them to eternal life,” we come to place ourselves in the rays of Your light.

And, since You have wished to show us Your Heart as the living symbol of the Everlasting Love which loves each one of us, teach us how to enter into its contemplation.

At Calvary, You allowed streams of living water to spring forth from Your side, pierced by the lance.  With great joy and thanksgiving, we come to draw our salvation from this life-giving Source.

Savior Jesus, to contemplate Love is not enough for us;  we wish also to place ourselves at its service, as we learn from You that we also must “give our lives for our brothers and sisters.”

To this end, we ask You to consecrate all our activities, our sufferings, our prayers, as if they were “spiritual hosts” united to the Host consecrated on the altar in memory of You.  Allow that, united in this way to Your most pure, holy and unblemished offering, we may share in Your work of Redemption.  Grant that having lived in one faith and in one hope that all peoples may one day proclaim in one voice:

“For the Kingdom, the Power and the Glory are Yours now and for ever.  Amen!”

Prayer of Reparation

Jesus, Divine Savior, we ask You to cast a merciful glance upon us, Your Guards of Honor, united in faith, reparation, and love.  We place ourselves at Your feet with deep remorse for our own failings and those of our brothers and sisters.

For the way we have neglected Your Holy Name,
We wish to make reparation, Lord.

For the sacrileges and blasphemies of Your enemies,
We wish to make reparation, Lord.

For the disdain of Your holy laws and our failure to keep Sunday holy,
We wish to make reparation, Lord.

For neglecting Your Holy Tabernacle,
We wish to make reparation, Lord.

For the irreverence and indifference of those who approach Your altars,
We wish to make reparation, Lord.

For the way we resist the promptings of Your grace,
We wish to make reparation, Lord.

For the way we disobey Our Holy Mother, the Church,
We wish to make reparation, Lord.

For the carelessness, the coldness, and the ingratitude of Your children,
We wish to make reparation, Lord.

Lord Jesus, in order that we may cooperate in the building-up of Your Kingdom, grant that, in answer to the supreme desire of Your Heart, we may one day be consecrated in Unity, in this way bringing to completion the work of Your glory and our salvation.  Amen.

 Christ carrying cross

Prayer in Times of Trial

Father, I ask of You what is for me the hardest thing to do:  give me the grace to see the Cross of Your Son in all the suffering of my life, the grace to worship Your holy and unfathomable will in this Cross, the grace to follow Your Son all along the Way of the Cross, for as long as it may please You.

Grant that I be concerned for Your honor, and not only for my wellbeing;  then I will be able to carry my cross in atonement for my sins.

Do not let me grow bitter in my sufferings, but rather allow them to help me mature in patience, generosity, kindness, and the ardent desire one day to dwell there where there will be no more suffering.  Then You will wipe away the tears of those who love You, and who in their pain, believed in Your love and Your light, even in the darkest of nights.

Father, we wish to share in all things with Your Son:  in His life, His divine glory, therefore also in His suffering and death.  But give us, along with the cross, the strength to carry it;  give us the ability to see in this cross the blessing that it is;  send us the cross that will best contribute toward our salvation, according to Your wisdom.

Christ Jesus, Son of the Father, live in us, pray in us, suffer in us.  We ask for nothing else because in possessing You we are wealthy enough.  Amen.

Act of Consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

by St. Margaret Mary

O Sacred Heart of Jesus, I give and consecrate to Thee, my actions and pains, my sufferings and my life, in order that my entire being may be devoted to honor, love and glorify Thy Sacred Heart.  It is my sincere determination to be and to do all for Thy love.  I renounce with all my heart, all that may be displeasing to Thee.

I choose Thee, O Sacred Heart, for the only object of my love, the protector of my life, the pledge of my salvation, the remedy of my weakness and inconstancy, the repairer of my past defects, and my safe asylum at the hour of death.  Be then, O Heart of Goodness, my advocate near God the Father and save me from His just anger.

O Heart of Love, in Thee I place all my confidence, I fear much from my own malice and weakness but I hope all from Thy goodness.  Destroy in me all that displeases or resists Thee.  Let Thy pure love be so deeply impressed on my heart that I may never forget, or be separated from Thee.

O Jesus, I implore Thee, by Thy goodness, to let my name be written in Thy Sacred Heart, that living and dying in quality of Thy slave, I may find all my glory and happiness in Thee.  Amen.

Claude de la Colombiere (2)

Act of Confidence

by St. Claude la Colombière

My God, I’m so persuaded that You watch over all who hope in You and nothing can be lacking to those who await from You all things, that I have determined to live from now on without any concern, letting go and giving You all of my anxieties.  I will sleep and rest in peace because You, O Lord, and only You, have secured my hope.

Others can deprive me of possessions and reputation;  illness can take away my strength and means to serve You;  I myself can lose Your grace because of sin;  but I will not lose my hope;  I will conserve it until the last instant of my life and all the efforts from demons trying to take it away from me will be useless.  I will sleep and rest in peace.

Many others expect happiness in their richness and talents;  some may lean on the innocence of their lives, or the rigor of their penitence, or above all on the amount of their good works, or the fervor of their prayers.  As for myself, Lord You are all my confidence, because You Lord, only You have secured my hope.

No one has been deceived by this confidence.  No one who has waited in the Lord has been frustrated in their confidence.

Therefore, I am sure that I will be eternally happy because I firmly hope to be;  and because You, Oh My God, are in Whom I expect all.  In You I hope Lord, and never will I be confused.

I know very well. . . too well that I am fragile and inconstant, I know well the power of temptations against the most firm virtue;  I have seen stars fall from heaven and columns from the firmament;  but none of this can frighten me.  As long as I maintain firm my hope, I will be conserved from all calamities;  and I am sure to hope always, because I hope the same in this unchanging hope.

In conclusion, I am sure that I cannot hope in excess in You and that I will receive all that I would have hoped for in You.  Therefore, I know You will sustain me on the most rapid and slippery slopes, that You will strengthen me against the assaults and make my weakness triumph over the most tremendous enemies.

I hope You will always love me and I will love You without interruption;  to take once and for all my hopes as far as it can reach.  I hope in You and only in You!  Oh, My Creator!  In time and for all eternity.
    Amen.

Act of Self-offering

by St. Francis de Sales

O God of my heart, behold this heart which is Yours;  behold all my love, which I offer to You through the hands of Your tender Mother.  Receive, O holy Virgin, this offering; preserve it, and obtain that my heart may never have any love but for your Son and for you.

Novena of Confidence to the Sacred Heart

O Lord, Jesus Christ, to Your Most Sacred Heart I confide this intention (here mention your intention).  Only look upon me, then do what Your Heart inspires.  Let Your Sacred Heart decide, I count on It, I trust in It, I throw myself on It’s Mercy.  Lord Jesus, You will not fail me.  Sacred Heart of Jesus, I believe in Your love for me.  Sacred Heart of Jesus, Your Kingdom come.  O Sacred Heart of Jesus, I have asked for many favors, but I earnestly implore this one.  Take it.  Place it in Your Sacred Heart.  When the Eternal Father sees it covered with Thy Precious Blood, He will not refuse it.  It will be no longer my prayer, but Yours, O Jesus.  O Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place my trust in You.  Let me never be confounded.  Amen.

Offering to God of the Merits of Our Lord Jesus Christ

by St. Margaret Mary

My God, I offer You Your well-beloved Son, in thanksgiving for all the favors I have received from You;  for my offering and adoration, for the support of my requests, and the pledge of my resolutions;  finally, I offer Him as my love and my all.  Receive Him, Eternal Father, for all You desire of me;  for of myself I have nothing to offer that is worthy of You, except Jesus my Savior, whom You have given me with so much love.

Prayer to the Wound of the Sacred Heart

by St. Francis de Sales

Eternal Father, I offer to Your honor and glory, for my salvation and that of the whole world, the cruel thrust of the lance of Longinus which pierced our Savior’s Side, the Blood and Water which flowed from It and the bitter pain felt by His Blessed Mother.

I return thanks to You and bless You for all these favors, asking You, through the merits of this mystery, to forgive all the sins I have committed, to cleanse my heart of all impure and earthly affections, and to open it to Your holy inspirations.  Amen.

Prayer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Wounded by the Lance

O Jesus, so loving and so little loved, humbly prostrate at the foot of Your Cross, we offer to Your divine Heart, opened by the lance and consumed with love, the homage of our most humble adoration.  We return thanks to You, O most loving Savior, for having permitted the soldier to pierce Your Side.  Grant us a haven of salvation in Your open Heart.

Blessed be the hour and the moment when, through the wound made by the lance, Blood and Water flowed from Your divine Heart.  Purify and regenerate our souls in this all-healing stream flowing from the true Fount of salvation.  Permit us, O Lord, to cast into this stream our sins and those of the whole world that we may be saved by Your unutterable love.  Grant us, O Jesus, that Your Sacred Heart may be our dwelling place in this life and our refuge at the hour of death.  Amen.

Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi

My Lord Jesus Christ, two graces I beg of you before I die:  the first is that in my lifetime I may feel, in my soul and in my body, as far as possible, that sorrow which You, sweet Jesus, endure in the hour of Your bitter passion;  the second is that I may feel in my heart, as far as possible, that abundance of love with which You, Son of God, were inflamed, so as willingly to endure so great a passion for us sinners.

Prayer of St. Margaret Mary

Eternal Father, permit me to offer You the Heart of Jesus Christ Your beloved Son, as He Himself offered It in sacrifice to You.  Receive this offering for me, as well as all the desires, sentiments, affections, movements, and acts of His Sacred Heart.  They are all mine, since He offered Himself for me, and I wish to have no other desires than His.  Receive them in satisfaction for my sins, and in thanksgiving for all Your benefits.  Grant me through His merits all the graces necessary for my salvation, especially that of final perseverance.  Receive them as so many acts of love, adoration and praise, which I offer to Your divine Majesty, since it is through the Heart of Jesus that You are worthily honored and glorified.  Amen.

Prayer to Jesus the True Friend

by St. Claude la Colombière

Jesus, You are my only true Friend.

You share in my troubles, You bear them with me, You know the secret of bringing good out of them for me.  You listen to me kindly when I tell You of my afflictions and You never fail to soften them.

I can always find You everywhere;  You never go away, and if I am obliged to change my dwelling I never fail to find You in the place where I have gone.

You are never tired of hearing my voice;  You never wary of doing me good.  I am assured of being loved if I love You.  You do not need all that I possess and You are not in any way poorer for communicating to me what You possess.

However wretched I am, a more noble, finer spirit or even a holier one will never take Your friendship from me;  as for death, which snatches from us all our other friends, it will only reunite me with You.

None of the disgraces of age or the disfavors of fortune can separate me from You;  on the contrary, I will never enjoy Your presence more fully, You will never be closer than when all is most in my disfavor.

You suffer my shortcomings with admirable patience;  even my infidelities, my ungratefulness do not wound You at all to the extent that You are always ready to come back if I so wish.

Oh Jesus, grant me the grace of desiring this so that I may be all Yours for all time and for all eternity.  Amen.

Act of Love

by St. John Vianney, the Curé of Ars

I love You, O my God.
My only desire is to love You,
until the last breath of my life.

I love You, O infinitely loveable God,
and I prefer to die loving You,
rather than to live for an instant without You.

I love You, O my God,
and I desire only to go to heaven,
to have the happiness of loving You perfectly.

I love You, O my God,
and my only fear is to go to hell,
because one will never have the sweet solace,
of loving You there.

O my God,
if my tongue cannot say at all time that I love You,
at least I want my heart to repeat it to You
as many times as I breathe.

Ah!  Do me the grace:
to suffer while loving You,
to love You while suffering,
and, that when I die:
I not only will love You
but experience it in my heart.

I beg You that
the closer I come to my final end,
You will increase and perfect my love for You.
Amen.

 Prayer of St. Thomas Aquinas

Grant, O merciful God, that I may ardently desire, carefully examine, truly know, and perfectly fulfill those things that are pleasing to You, to the praise and glory of Your holy name.  Direct my course, O my God, that I may do what You require me to do.  Show me the way and grant that I may follow it as is necessary and profitable to my soul.

Grant to me, O Lord my God, that I may not be found wanting in prosperity;  that I may not be lifted up by one nor cast down by the other.  May I find joy in nothing but what leads to You;  sorrow in nothing but what leads away from You.  May I seek to please no one, nor fear to displease any.  May I fear only You.  May I despise all transitory things, O Lord, and treasure all things that are eternal.  Let me loath all delights without You, nor desire anything apart from You.  Let me find pleasure in all toil that is for You;  and weariness in all rest where You are not.

Grant to me, O my God, that I may turn my heart to You always, and grieve for my failings with a firm purpose of amendment.  Make me, O Lord, obedient without opposition;  poor without murmur;  humble without pretense;  merry without riotousness;  serious without heaviness;  cheerful without frivolity;  God-fearing without abjectness;  truthful without duplicity;  doing good without presumption;  correcting my neighbor without pride;  edifying him by word and example without hypocrisy.

Grant to me, O Lord God, a vigilant heart that no subtle speculation may ever lead me from You;  a nobleness that no unworthy affection may draw from You;  a rectitude that no evil purpose may turn from You.  Grant me a steadfastness which no tribulation may shatter;  a freedom that no violent affection may overthrow.  Give me, O Lord my God, a mind to know You, diligence to seek You, wisdom to find You.  Give me a way of life pleasing to You, perseverance to trust and await You, and finally faith to embrace You.

Grant that my punishment may be averted through penance here;  Your benefits used in this life through Your grace;  that Your joys may be enjoyed in heaven in glory.  Who lives and reigns, one God forever and ever.  Amen.

Soul of Christ, sanctify me.
Body of Christ, save me.
Blood of Christ, inebriate me.
Water from Christ’s side, wash me.
Passion of Christ, strengthen me.
O good Jesus, hear me.
Within Thy wounds hide me.
Suffer me not to be separated from Thee.
From the malicious enemy defend me.
In the hour of my death call me.
And bid me come unto Thee.
That I may praise Thee with Thy saints
and with Thy angels.
Forever and ever.

Adorable Heart of Jesus, sanctuary of the love that led God to make Himself man, to sacrifice His life for our salvation, and to make of His Body the food of our souls:  in gratitude for that infinite charity I give You my heart, and with it all that I possess in this world, all that I am, all that I shall do, all that I shall suffer.  But, my God, may this heart, I implore You, be no longer unworthy of You;  make it like unto Yourself;  surround it with Your thorns and close its entrance to all ill-regulated affections;  set there Your Cross, make my heart feel its worth, make it willing to love You.  Kindle my heart with Your divine flame.  May it burn for Your glory;  may it be all Yours, when You have done what You will with it.  You are its consolation in its troubles, the remedy of its ills,  its strength and refuge in temptation.  Amen.

Penetrate and Possess My Whole Being

by Blessed Cardinal John Henry Newman

Dear Jesus, help me to spread Your fragrance wherever I go.
Flood my soul with Your spirit and life.

Penetrate and possess my whole being so utterly that my life may only be a radiance of Yours.
Shine through me and be so in me that every soul I come in contact with may feel Your presence in my soul.

Let them look up and see no longer me, but only Jesus!
Stay with me and then I will begin to shine as You shine, so to shine as to be a light to others.
The light, O Jesus, will be all from You;  none of it will be mine.
It will be You, shining on others through me.

Let me thus praise You in the way which You love best, by shining on those around me.
Let me preach You without preaching, not by words but by example, by the catching force, the sympathetic influence of what I do, the evident fullness of the love my heart bears for You.
Amen.

Prayer of the Guards of Honor to Mary at the Foot of the Cross

O Mary, the most tender and most afflicted of mothers, by the incomparable sorrow which you felt at the foot of the Cross when you saw the soldier approach the Body of your adorable Son and transpierced it from side to side, obtain for us, whose advocate and mother you are, the efficacious application of the Blood and Water that flowed from the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Our new Eve, the dawn of salvation for the world, lost from its beginning, obtain for us still some days of mercy and pardon, by inspiring us with a general and tender devotion to the Heart of your divine Son, by yourself propagating the devotion of reparation for His Guard of Honor.

O Blessed Virgin, mediatrix and reparatrix, all our hope is in you.  Receive us among your beloved children.  Show us the interior of the Heart of Jesus.  Make us, after His example, profoundly humble, and be pleased to give us your blessing.  Amen.

Prayer to Our Lady at the Foot of the Cross

Prayer to Our Lady of the Sacred Heart

Remember, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, what ineffable power your Divine Son has given you over His Own adorable Heart.  Full of trust in your merits, we come before you and beg your protection.  O heavenly Treasurer of the Heart of Jesus, that Heart which is the inexhaustible source of all graces, which you open to us at your good pleasure, in order that from it may flow forth upon us the riches of love and mercy, light and salvation that are contained therein;  grant us, we beseech you, the favors which we seek … We can never, never be refused by you, and since you are our Mother, O Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, graciously hear our prayers and grant our request.  Amen.

O My Sovereign, O My Mother

O my Sovereign, O my Mother, I offer myself to you entirely, and as a sign of my devotion, I now devote my eyes, my ears, my mouth, my heart and my whole self to you.  Since I belong to you, O Good Mother, keep me, defend me, as your own goods and your property.  Amen.

Mary, Mother of Jesus, and My Mother

by Blessed Teresa of Calcutta

You were the first one to hear Jesus cry, “I Thirst.”
You know how real, how deep is His longing for me and for the poor.
I am yours.
Teach me;  bring me face to face with the love in the Heart of Jesus Crucified.
With your help, Mother Mary, I will listen to Jesus’ Thirst and it will be for me a Word of Life.
Standing near you, I will give Him my love, and I will give Him the chance to love me, and so be the cause of your joy and so to satiate Jesus’ Thirst for Love of souls.  Amen.

O St. John, beloved disciple of Jesus, who was left in His stead as son to His most holy Mother and who witnessed the mysterious outpouring of the Blood and Water from the wound in the Sacred Heart, obtain for us so ardent a love for Our Lord that, as loyal Guards, we may, like you, take our stand with Mary at the foot of the Cross, to offer unceasingly the chalice of salvation in behalf of the Church and in reparation for the sins of all.  Amen.

Prayer to St. Francis of Assisi

O St. Francis, seraph of love, in whose heart the love of God burnt so brightly, and who so wondrously practiced evangelical poverty, obtain for us a spark of that fire of divine charity which consumed you, and the grace to imitate your total detachment from the goods of this world.  You were so favored as to receive the sacred stigmata, help us, through your merits and prayers, ever to carry our cross courageously and to bring forth the worthy fruits of penance.  Amen.

Prayer to St. Claude la Colombière

Eternal and merciful Father, You designated St. Claude to be the faithful servant of Your divine Son, a man after His own Heart.  To St. Margaret Mary St. Claude gave enlightened guidance to help her understand and make known the deepest mysteries of the Heart of Christ and the riches of His love.

In our day, may St. Claude assist us also to make known by word and deed the superabundant love of the Heart of Christ for every person, as well as the ardent desire of that Heart to heal any divisions in and among families and nations.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Through the intercession of St. Claude glorify Your Heart by granting us also this favor. (Here mention your personal request.)

Our Father…,  Hail Mary…, Glory be….
Sacred Heart of Jesus, may Your kingdom come.
St. Claude, pray for us.

Prayer of St. Gertrude for the Faithful Departed

O most compassionate Jesus, have mercy on the souls detained in purgatory, for whose redemption You took upon Yourself our nature and endured a bitter death.  Mercifully hear their groanings, look with pity on their tears which they now shed before You, and by  the virtue of Your Passion release them from the pains due their sins.  O most pitiful Jesus, let Your precious Blood reach down into purgatory, and refresh and revive the captive souls which suffer there.  Stretch forth Your strong right hand and bring them forth into the place of refreshment, light, and peace.  Amen.
